Modeling Punching Machine
by Hamid Hadidi, Iran

Hello everyone, Are you ready to create a punching machine in 3ds max? In this tutorial we will work with polygon, slice plane, shape merge, editable poly, spline, chamfer box and chamfer cylinder.

Step 1: First of all, In Customize> Unit Setup change display unit scale to metric and select Centimeters so you can follow the tutorial exactly with dimensions. Then create a chamfer box with these dimensions. Lenght=45cm, Width=10cm, Height=2cm, Fillet=0.5cm and convert into editable poly by right clicking.

Step 2: Select the top polygon in the editable poly and uniformly scale down.

Step 3: Go to the splines create 3 rectangles with these parameters

Length: 30 cm, 28 cm, 2.5 cm
Width: 1 cm, 4 cm, 3.8 cm
Corner radius: 0, 0, 0.8 cm

And move them like the picture. And attach them on editable spline
.

Step 4: Now we want to create the spline shape on our chamfer box, click on chamfer box 01 and go to the Compound Objects > Shape Merge, then pick the spline as a shape (like this picture). Now you can delete the spline.

Step 5: Go to the editable poly and create the new polygons that you created with spline and extrude them (-0.1 cm). Then click on slice plane and slice from center and now delete left side of your model. In the Tools menu, select Mirror and create a instance clone in x axis.
